Canadians need a domestic food policy along side our export policy if we are to feed our people. farming is dying a slow death because farmers can't compete with the food dumped on our market due to international agreements. WE need to support farmers by increasing support for agriculture, food food development and small scale food processing infrastructure on a regional basis. Investment in domestic regional food systems is urgently required--without a domestic food policy, we are extremely vulnerable.

I started a BC petition against the meat regulations and ran as candidate for the Green Party mainly because of their farm policies that supports family farms, not Monsanto. Farmers and eaters must have a choice and I as an eater cannot choose what I eat unless I know who grows it and how. This is crucial.

Strength in community! Let's take care of our old, new and young farmers. Seems like most the regulations coming down the pipe on us farmers are punishing the small farmer, usually for problems created by large industrial agriculture. Does that make sense?

History has proven time and again that countries can not rely on imports to feed their citizens - government, it's time to create a national food policy. The Ag groups have done the legwork - there's no excuse not to.

I started in this industry eleven years ago after a successful career within the federal bureaucracy. I now grow 120 acres of tree fruits. What has become a real eye opener to me is the amount of federal support other horticultural producing countries have not only through funding, but good policies that allow the farmers to sustain a good agricultural future for themselves, their families and their countries. We on the other hand have very little but words and no support in a good agricultural policy. It's as if our policy makers and the bureaucracy that supports them, are all in the back pockets of our major retailers.

Farming is a big employer in Ontario .There is no fresher and safer food than food bought from a local Farmer. The Ontario Gov't supports us with RMP now it is time for the Federal parties to understand the need to keep rural Canada producing food locally and not becoming more and more dependent on imports.

I think the rural vote should return to being the primary concern of our municipal, provincial and federal representatives. The protection of food land and the individuals who produce our food is as important as the protection of our drinking water. As the number of producers declines the urban population must be educated and informed about the direct relationship between farm issues and their consumption of food. Producers need to be recognized as business owners who make key decisions that impact everyone's daily lives.
